Hot tips for the home: How to remove lino flooring!
I've spent the last few days deep in DIY-land fixing various things in my kitchen. One of the things that needed fixing was the the joists that support the floor and this required me to lift teh floor boards. Unfortunately a previous occupant had covered the floor with a lino floor covering and stuck it down using the EU glue lake. It took me ages to figure out how to remove it easily, but once you know how it's trivial! Read carefully, here comes the hot tip:
Before trying to lift the lino, take a sharp knife (such as a Stanley knife or similar) and score through the entire length of the lino at roughly 30cm intervals. Then use some flat object like a wallpaper scrapper to lift the corner of one of the strips sufficiently to allow you to start peeling it back. Cutting the lino into strips like this makes it much easier to peel the lino away from the adhesive used to stick it to the floor. Before I hit on this method it took me an hour and a half to remove 1 square metre of lino from the floor. After I discovered the power of the knife, it took me less than 20 minutes to remove the other 14 square metres of lino.
And remember, you heard it hear first at the Happy Home blog! See, it's not all just computing stuff!
